𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴? 𝗤𝗟𝗗 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲? 𝗡𝗭 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀?

Ever since Australian Poker Tour announced the return of the State of Origin 2 days ago, the poker world has been buzzing, both on and around the tables. It will be held at their upcoming Brisbane Super Series after an 11 year hiatus, and also triggered much debate social media. So whats all the hype, huffing, and head scratching all about?

𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?

The first thing to unpack is the comments, thoughts and opinions of much loved and one of many passionate ladies on the poker scene, recently self appointed shenanigan ambassador Gina V (Cheshire Cat). After the first few teams were released for this years return of the State of Origin, Gina just identified the lack of women selected (since then NZ have revealed Sosia Jiang had made their team). Gina then correctly revised her post to clarify her intent was not accuse any one of sexism, but just to state she feels this is a missed opportunity, and she believed that mandating female representation in this invite-only event would have had a positive trickle-down effect on the larger playing group. Instead of a 6 player team, why not 7? I can see the good intentions here, wanting to represent women in poker is something most agree on, and its courageous to speak up on this stuff when its possible there could be some backlash. Team selection in anything, whether is is Rugby League Origin teams, or a local under 16s state squad, or even the Australian Olympic team will always bring about healthy passionate debate, but specifically when it comes to the APT State of Origin there is another point that hasnt really been mentioned.

The State of Origin Poker has a $21K buy-in, 6 players are putting up $3.5K each of their own money, including the captain/head selector, and then trying to win a share of $168K prize pool rather than losing it, so the captain is incentivised to pick a team to win the money, as well as handling the pressure and experience of bigger buy-in. If you look at the teams announced so far, most all regularly play 10Ks, and even higher, (maybe with the exception of one or two) Mandating a female player for representation reasons would mostly likely be a problem, but if there is a female player that is at the elite 10K+ level which there will be at some stage in the future, they wouldnt be overlooked. Another idea I heard floated around was a Womens team to enter as their own team, I think this is a great idea, but once again, having a team of 6 ladies willing to put up 3.5K each wouldnt be easy.

𝗤𝗟𝗗 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲? Its been the QLD way in rugby league for 20 years, picking their team of superstars from whatever town or country they like, Greg Inglis (Bowraville, NSW); Billy Moore (Tenterfield, NSW); Israel Folau (Minto, NSW); Lote Tuqiri (Fiji); Brad Thorn (NZ). Refer to the following QLD recruitment clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbgShiaal6E - QLD captain the Alex Lynskey have already recruited the experienced high stakes players Gary Lin (SA & CHN) and Romain Morvan (Frenchman that has called QLD home for a few years) in 2024, and if QLD could find a shred of Queensland heritage on Kristen Foxen, she would snap be in the team in 2025. We will give them a pass this year, great young players, and notable absentees due to prior commitments Naj Ajez, Josh McCully or Adrian Attenborough may get a call next year too. QLD is now a breeding ground for pros, so picking that team would be an incredibly tough job.

𝗡𝗭 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀? The State of Origin team make up includes the player known as the ICON. I havent been able to fully clarify the icon rules, but looking at NSW and QLD teams, they have elected to go with successful and much loved businessmen and poker enthusiasts, Robert Spano and Martin Ward, very successful players in their own right. New Zealand captain Hamish Crawshaw has gone all out with his icon, securing the services of Sosia Jiang (SJ) who is a regular in the Triton Super High Roller stakes, having cashed in multiple $200K+ buy-ins, that will be a tough battle for not just the other icons with that pick, meanwhile Victoria have named their icon as former NBA superstar Andrew Bogut.

Overall State of Origin team selection is a simple concept that will always create debate which is fine and creates more hype. Its the best of the best, the captain tries to pick the top 5 players in the state pending availability, plus the icon who I think can be any high profile player as far as Im aware, but possibly must not be a pro. Follow along the results, get behind your state whether you were born there or you are adopted to it, its a great concept!

Yep now that you have brought up the buyin, I agree with your comment that mandatory female selection at 3.5k entry could be a problem, especially in some states. I still love the fact that we are discussing female representation in poker and that Georgina Vuksanovic has initiated this conversation ❤️

I am personally all for more women being in the State of origin. I think mandating it is an option we should contemplate as it helps people start to think about who is able to compete and hold their own at that level. If there was then a lack of females competing at that level (which I don’t think there is and I don’t think the 3.5k buy in is holding anyone back. We had multiple women buying into the 5k at APL millions) but the worst case scenario is we start to get people coaching and helping women to develop for next year knowing they need them on the team. We have a lot of very strong female players within the Australian circuit and continued growth on that is going to be benefit us all.

I think it’s also important to consider that we don’t know whether any captains have had conversations with some women in poker about being on the team either. I mean even Angel Guillén hasn’t selected Lynn, our very own poker hall of famer, for his team (what a hilarious psychological play he missed out on….to have one of our poker hall of famers playing for the international team!) I don’t think mandatory women representation is the way to go in a sport that has no physical edge to whether you are a man or woman. I also love that inclusiveness is being talked about. And it’s easy to overlook women especially when it’s a team being built, so maybe next year a female could be a captain of one of the states. Or maybe one of the captains will remember this post and be reminded what an edge it is to have a woman on your team and choose a woman or women next year. I can think of at least 5 women who have outstanding results who would have no issue with the $3.5k entry or playing in larger buy-ins. And many other women in the community that could get backing for the $3.5k in a nanosecond.
